STI Risk Assessment: The Cliff's Notes

Need to check out what your sexually transmitted disease or infection risk might be in a jiffy?

Based on any one instance of the following, you may/can have been at risk for transmitting (giving to someone else) or contracting (getting it yourself) the following diseases and infections:

Vaginal or anal intercourse [1], or vaginal intercourse [2] with a condom [3] that has also been used for anal intercourse:

  • Bacterial Vaginosis [4]
  • Chlamydia [5]
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) [6]
  • Gonorrhea [7]
  • Hepatitis [8]
  • Herpes Simplex [9]
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) [10]
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV, Warts) [11]
  • Molluscum Contagiosum [12]
  • Pubic Lice [13]
  • Scabies [14]
  • Syphilis [15]
  • Trichomoniasis [16]

Oral sex [17]:

("blow job," "giving head," "going down," "rimming")

  • Chlamydia [5]
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) [6]
  • Gonorrhea [7]
  • Hepatitis [8]
  • Herpes Simplex [9]
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) [10]
  • Molluscum Contagiosum [12]
  • Syphilis [15]

Manual sex:

("hand job," or "fingering")

  • Bacterial Vaginosis [4]
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) [6]
  • Herpes Simplex [9]
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV, Warts) [11]
  • Molluscum Contagiosum [12]
  • Pubic Lice [13]
  • Scabies [14]

Safer sex - using latex barriers, getting regular and complete STI [18] testing, and adapting lifestyle issues -- vastly reduces these risks.

So, if you're sexually active [19] and not practicing safer sex [20], or not sure if you are, check out how [21], and hop on it! And once you've started becoming in any way sexually active, it's time to start getting into your doctor or sexual healthcare clinic's office for those yearly tests [22].
