Antifungal and birth control pill

I took itraconazole (Sporanox) 200mg for 3 days to treat a recurring vaginal yeast infection about a week and a half ago. 4 days before that I had had unprotected sex with my boyfriend while on the pill. Since then we've used condoms every time, and plan to continue. Now I'm 3 days into my week off the pill after finishing the pack, and I still haven't gotten my period. I had very very slight spotting 1 day after finishing the treatment a week ago and nothing since. Could the antifungal I took have affected my pills effectiveness? I asked the pharmacist when I brought in my prescription, and she told me that itraconazole doesn't affect the pill. However, there are some medical studies I've seen floating around as well as some clinic pages that recommend using backup contraception during treatment with this pill. Do antifungals inhibit combined birth control pills? I'm freaking out over possibly having gotten pregnant from the sex I had before I started treatment.

Check out a clear walkthrough on the site here about BC interaction concerns: http://www.scarleteen.com/article/bodie ... th_control

You'll see that antifungals are a nonissue.

Just FYI, though, since one person having yeast infections can incline a sexual partner to, and you didn't use a condom, and they haven been chronic for you, I'd just make sure your partner be sure that he himself gets tested for them soon. And that until he does, you use condoms just in case this is a cause of your infections continuing to come back or could be.

Thanks for the help, I hadn't seen that page before. Now I can rest easy. I had also read somewehere else that this medicine has the potential to cause delayed withdrawal bleeds, so I guess I probably shouldn't freak out so much. I guess if I don't get my period I'll take a test before starting my next pack to be sure.

Well my boyfriend actually had symptoms of the yeast infection too after a few eeks, so at the same time as I got my prescription for the itraconazole, he told the gyno about his symptoms too and she gave me a prescription for antifungal cream as well as fluconazole pills to use once a week for a month, since it's been a recurring issue. Since the day I went into the clinic, we've decided to use condoms until we both finish treatment for the yeast (in about another 3 weeks). Since it's been recurring for me, I was told to retake this treatment again in another 3 weeks just to be absolutely sure the yeast is gone.
