A 12 year old girl's death has sparked the Egyptian Health ministry to issue the decree of FC being "prohibited for any doctors, nurses, or any other person to carry out any cut of, flattening or modification of any natural part of the female reproductive system, either in government hospitals, nongovernment hospitals or any other places."

While it's a step in the right direction, there is not a law nor specific penalty in place to impose upon violators.

The problem is that, in many cases, Female Genital Mutilation isn't carried out in hospitals or by doctors or nurses. In many, poorer areas it's done by people such as midwives, with no anasthetic and few, if any, sanitation procedures. While it is, indeed, a step in the right direction, goverments across Egypt, and every other country where this still occurs, need to step up and educate the people about why this should stop, and create actual, strict penalties for anyone performing this horrible, damaging abuse of women and girls. I think it's disgusting that this hasn't even been addressed by the governments until now.

it's good that msnbc covered the story (at least, put the article on their website). The times when the general public hears about these stories in western society are few and far between and it should be really a lot more often. that stuff freaks me out every time I hear about it.

'It also evoked memories of a 1995 CNN television documentary depicting a barber circumcising a 10-year-old girl in a Cairo slum'

reminiscient of illiegal abortion perhaps? clearly sexual desire in a woman is undesirable but somehow they can't bother to tame sexual desire in boys, many of which, despite their scrict muslim backgrounds are no stranger to sex and often indulge in prostitution and rape
