Why are a lot of schools in the U.S. teaching abstinence only courses instead of ones that actually tell you about sex and STD's? My teacher for health at my high school said that the two main points of sex ed. was to help us to make the right choices and to know the consequences. Our Course isn't abstinence only, but how come a lot of schools are?

Many schools teach the federal curriculum, which dictates abstinence only. By doing this, they recieve federal funding. Often, it's enough of an incentive to cut short the education.

My high school, also in Washington, taught us a basic overveiw of everything, and there was not an emphasis on absitence. Many people are not so lucky.

This topic gives a lot of good information. Read through it. Miz S gives a wonderful explanation about it.
