i know we had a thread like this recently, but is was your song WITH your partner. well, since a lot of people don't have partners, i thought i'd start a "whats your song" topic about YOUR song.

for me, it would have to be "no surprises" by radiohead. it's a beautiful, lullabye-esque song, but the lyrics are really .... raw, and do describe my life rather well. lets see:

quote:
A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal
You look so tired and unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent
This is my final fit, my final bellyache with
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please
Such a pretty house, such a pretty garden
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please

yep. what's your song?

------------------
"i need to wash myself again to hide all the dirt and pain, 'cos i'd be scared that there's nothing underneath"- radiohead

Hm.

Right now it's "Nothing On Me" by Shawn Colvin, which got used as the theme for some TV show. I also like "Polaroids," which is also by her, a lot.

Well I don't tell jokes
And I don't take notes
You been sayin there ain't much hope
You got nothin on me
I got friends uptown
And they don't talk down
They been keepin me safe and sound
We got somethin to be

So in case you hadn't noticed
I'm alright
Not like I was before
Things used to be so hopeless
But not tonight
Tonight I'm walkin out that door

I'm not gonna cry
I'm wavin goodbye
And I know this time
You got nothin on me

Well it ain't that tough
Just more of the usual stuff
One heartache is more than enough
There ain't nothin to see

I got friends uptown
And they still come 'round
They been keepin me safe and sound
We got somethin to be

So don't you try to save me
With your advice
Or turn me into somebody else
Cuz I'm not crazy and you're not nice
Baby keep it to yourself

I'm not gonna cry
And I'm wavin goodbye
And I know this time
You got nothin on me

I don't have a song for me but there are a couple that I absolutely love.

"name" -googoo dolls
"lightening crashes" -live
"light in your eyes" -blessid union

But if I had to pick my song, I think it would be "name".

Sade - King Of Sorrow

quote:
I'm crying everyone's tears
And there inside our private war
I died the night before
And all of these remnants of joy and disaster
What am I suppose to do

I want to cook you a soup that warms your soul
But nothing would change, nothing would change at all
It's just a day that brings it all about
Just another day and nothing's any good

The DJ's playing the same song
I have so much to do
I have to carry on
I wonder if this grief will ever let me go
I feel like I am the king of sorrow, yeah
The king of sorrow

Here are a few of my faves (I can relate to too many songs):
"Scarecrow" & "Angels" by Melissa Etheridge
"Small Things" by Blink182
"Lucky 4 U" by SHeDAISY
and I think it's called "Red Strokes" or "Colors" by Garth Brooks

"If My Heart Had Wings" By Faith Hill

Faith Hill

D*mn these old wheels

Rollin' too slow

I stare down this white line

With so far to go

Headlights keep comin'

Loneliness hummin' along

Who poured this rain

Who made these clouds

I stare through this windsheild

Thinkin' out loud

Time keeps on crawlin

Love keeps on callin me home

I'd jump all these mountains

And take to the skies

Sail through the heavens

With stars in my eyes

If my heart had wings

I would fly to you

And lie beside you as you dream

If my heart had wings

We both committed

We both agreed

You'd do what you have to

To get what you need

Feeling you near me with so many miles in between

Oh Lord it ain't easy

Out here in the dark

To keep us together so far apart

If my heart had wings

I would fly to you

And lie beside you as you dream

If my heart had wings

Stuck on this circle

Spinning around

Cut loose from this road

That keeps tying me down

If my heart had wings

I would fly to you

And lie beside you as you dream

If my heart had wings

Well, lots of songs. I am lyric obsessed. But I think I should quote two songs by Lou Reed that used to be quite fitting....and which gave me my online name. A boy who who wanted me (and who I did not want) gave me the lyrics about 2 years ago. Oy.

CAROLINE SAYS – LOU REED

Caroline says that I'm just a toy
she wants a man, not just a boy
Oh, Caroline says, ooohhh, Caroline says

Caroline says she can't help but be mean
or cruel, or oh so it seems
Oh, Caroline says, Caroline says

She say she doesn't want a man who leans
Still she is my Germanic -
- Queen
Yeah, she's my Queen

The things she does, the things she says
people shouldn't treat others that way
But at first I thought I could take it all

Just like poison in a vial
hey, she was often very vile
But of course, I thought I could take it all

Caroline says that I'm not a man
so she'll go get it catch as catch can
Oh, Caroline says, yeah, Caroline says

Caroline says moments in time
can't continue to be only mine
Oh, Caroline says, yeah, Caroline says

She treats me like I am a fool
But to me she's still a German -

- Queen, ooohhh, she's my -
- Queen, ya ...
Queen, hey, baby, she's my Queen
(Queen)

CAROLINE SAYS II – LOU REED

Caroline says
as she gets up off the floor
Why is it that you beat me
it isn't any fun

Caroline says
as she makes up her eyes
You ought to learn more about yourself
think more than just I

But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her

What is in her mind
what is in her mind

Caroline says
as she gets up from the floor
You can hit me all you want to
but I don't love you anymore

Caroline says
while biting her lip
Life is meant to be more than this
and this is a bum trip

But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her

What is in her mind
what is in her mind

She put her fist through the window pane
It was such a funny feeling

It's so cold in Alaska
it's so cold in Alaska
It's so cold in Alaska

*My* song would have to be Wings of a Dove by Madness.

quote:

Take time fo your pleasure
And laugh with love
Take the hands of another
And sing for the wings of a dove
Woah, woah, yeah, yeah, yeah
For the wings of a dove

Such a good song.
Other than that, in close runner up positions:
Coldplay - Shiver
Oasis - Masterplan
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood (the good album version, not the speeded up and cut single version )

Doesn't exactly describe me but one of my favourites: "Someone to Watch over Me". Lyrics by Ira Gershwin, music by George Gershwin. The link has a very lovely arrangement of the tune.

"Waking Up" by Elastica-- a song about how terribly difficult it is to get out of bed on certain mornings...

"Brown-Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison -- the first song I can remember hearing, rougly 1981. And because I looooooove brown-eyed women.

"Not Enough Time" by INXS -- because there's "not enough time, for all that I want for you..." A song about wishing the world would pause for a moment to give you more time to enjoy it.

"What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong -- no explanation needed.

It's hard to pick just one, there are songs that come and go as I grow up... I guess if I had to pick one now that would be a song that I wrote the lyrics and my ex-boyfriend did the music and he plays that with his band... it was written 6 months ago, after we broke up. Here it goes:

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

(no title - yet)

We live in circles
Since we are born
No pace or slow motion
Life's our emotion

When we grow up
Love comes around
We start our life in spirals
And you say: why now?

Why?
Look ahead, don't fall
Look behind, you're so smart
Lay me there
Lie me now
Tell me you love me
Push me to the ground

Life's so strange
No chance to draw it
There's no circles and no spirals
Just a big black hole to fall

We live in circles
Since we are born
No pace or slow motion
Life's our emotion

Where?
Look ahead, don't fall
Look behind, you're so smart
Lay me there
Lie me now
Tell me you loved me
Before I fall onto the ground

Standing here I imagine
Lying there I dream of you...
It's such a big feeling in a black heart
Big black hole called love

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

so... what do you think? Now that I read it I think the poem itself has a certain pace within the words, I love it. The music my ex made is Placebo-ish.

If I had to choose a popular song, I think I'd actually choose one by Placebo. There are many that would fit, but maybe "Without you I'm nothing" is the right one... here it goes...

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Without you I'm nothing" - Placebo

Strange infatuation seems to grace the evening tide.
I'll take it by your side.
Such imagination seems to help the feeling slide.
I'll take it by your side.
Instant correlation sucks and breeds a pack of lies.
I'll take it by your side.
Oversaturation curls the skin and tans the hide.
I'll take it by your side.

tick - tock x3
tick - tick - tick - tick - tick - tock

I'm unclean, a libertine
And every time you vent your spleen,
I seem to lose the power of speech,
Your slipping slowly from my reach.
You grow me like an evergreen,
You never see the lonely me at all

I...
Take the plan, spin it sideways.
I...
Fall.
Without you, I'm Nothing.
Without you, I'm nothing.
Without you, I'm nothing.
Take the plan, spin it sideways.
Without you, I'm nothing at all.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

that's it

I was gifted the song "Black No 1" by Type O Negative a few years ago, which was absolutely perfect for me at the time of my pseudo goth stage:

quote:
She's in love with herself
She likes the dark
On her milk white neck
The Devil's mark
It's all Hallows Eve
The moon is full
Will she trick or treat
I bet she will

She's got date at midnight
With Nosferatu
Oh baby, Lilly Munster
Ain't got nothing on you
Well when I called her evil
She just laughed
And cast that spell on me
Boo Bitch Craft

Yeah you wanna go out 'cause it's raining and blowing
You can't go out 'cause your roots are showing
Dye em black
Black no. 1

Little wolf skin boots
And clove cigarettes
An erotic funeral
For witch she's dressed
Her perfume smells like
Burning leaves
Everyday is Halloween

It's not quite as fitting now, so I'm still waiting for a new one to come along

Perhaps 'I Am' by Radio Iodine

I have so many...well not really. Here's a few:

Christina Aguilera's 'El Beso Del Final' which in English is 'Last Kiss'. It helped me get through a tough break up. It descriped the last couple weeks perfectly:

No, I don't know why your attitude has changed
I hope that I'm wrong about it all
I don't want to believe that I lost you
Nor that our love is finished
I hear a voice, that's deep in me
That continues to repeat to me
What I don't want to hear

This one is 'The Burn'byMatchbox Twenty. I'm not sure why but I can just relate to this song.

    Thought about
Singin' but I couldn't remember all of the words
Breakin' but I couldn't get the pieces apart
Laughin' never knowing what the joke was about
    Now I'm down
And I wonder how I never got the Burn
And if I'm ever gonna learn
How lonely people make a life
    One strain at a time

This one by Nelly forgot-her-last is called I'm like a bird. I like this one because the first verse is talkin' about me!:

    You're beautiful, that's for sure
    You'll never ever fade
You're lovely but it's not for sure
    That I won't ever change
And though my love is rare
    Though my love is true

That's all I can think of right now...but when I get more, I'll get back with ya!

Hey, CallMeBuffChick and all others... did you know Nelly Furtado is from Portugal? wheee eheh

By the way she was in a talk show here a couple weeks ago (like those you have with David Letterman, Jay Leno, etc), and she seemed a bit "stupid", like she just behaved like a child, and I mean, not like a upbeat funny person, but really like a child. That kind of chocked me eheh I was wondering if she really has some mental delay or something.

But she's sure talented And I'm very proud she actually is Portuguese, like Rui da Silva who was number 1 across the UK

Enough of this eheh it's getting off-topic

Mine are:
*"Be Like That"- 3 Doors Down
*"Outside"- Staind
*Where Did You Go?" Full Devil Jacket
*"If I Was the One"- Ruff Endz
*"Love is Blind"- Eve

Okay, I know these are alot of songs, but each one of these is for a different mood I can be in... most of them are depressing, LOL... maybe I should start listening to some more uplifting songs!!!

Hmm. Good question!

According to my friends: "Bitch", Meredith Brooks (You and me both, Kitten!)

"Just a Girl", No Doubt-OK, this is totally corny and cliched, but it fits in some ways.

"El Scorcho", Weezer-Ah, the joys of unrequited love!

------------------
"Only in dreams
We see what it means
Reach out our hands
Hold on to hers
But when we wake
It's all been erased
And so it seems
Only in dreams..."

I have two. They're both sad, because well... I'm a sad person.

"To The Moon And Back" by Savage Garden: I am the woman in this song.

"On My Own" from Les Miserables: Ignoring the part about unrequited love, I'm like the girl in this song. I live in my head, pretending I'm in situations better than my current one, and every once in a while I look around and see how sorry my life actually is.

mmm.... let me think. I donīt identify myself with any "character" in a song, also i donīt like pretty much music with characters. But, anyway, i have "MY" Songs, those that in some way reflects parts of my personality:
-Aphex Twin "4" : Thatīs where my nickname comes A short, cute instrumental and weird tune. My happy side.
-Sonic Youth "Schizophrenia" : I love this one... í find it quite melancholical in some way, even a bit depressing. in fact, itīs quite a happy song.
-Radiohead "Everything in itīs Right Place" :
When i heard this song on CD the first time, i feel a warm fuzzy feeling and i said "oh this is one of the big ones"

Thatīs all

"Boss DJ" by Sublime. Just because it's beautiful.

There's a steal train coming through
I would take it if I can
And I would not lie to you
Because Sunday morning soon will come
And things would be much easier to say
Upon the microphone like a boss DJ
But I won't walk up upon the sea
Like it was dry land
The Boss DJ ain't nothin but a man

No trouble, no fuss, I know why...
It's so nice, I wanna hear the same song twice.
It's so nice, I wanna hear the same song twice.

Rumors flying all over town but it's stones and sticks
Cuz on the microphone is where I get my fix
Let the lovin' take hold of me
Cuz it will if you let it
I'm funky, not a junky but I know where to get it

No trouble, no fuss, I know why...
It's so nice, I wanna hear the same song twice.
It's so nice, I wanna hear the same song twice.

Mister DJ, don't stop the music.
I wanna know, are you feeling the same way too?
I wanna rock it with you girl, ooh girl, ooh girl, oooh girl

And there really ain't no time to waste
Really ain't no time to hate
Ain't got no time to waste, time to hate
There really ain't no time to make the time go away

Because it's so nice, I wanna hear the same song twice.
It's so nice, I wanna hear the same song twice.

Ooh girl, ooh girl, ooh girl, ooh girl...
Nowadays songs on the radio all drive me crazy...
But don't stop, don't stop.
Don't stop, don't stop.
Cuz it's so nice...

------------------
Do you want me girl to be your theif? Oh baby, just for you, I'll steal anything that you want me to.

The song "Wherever You Are" is from the movie "Pooh's Grand Adventure," but it's not a kiddie song. It applies to basically any situation of loss:

Wherever You Are

Come out moon
Come out wishing star
Come out, come out
Wherever you are

I'm out here in the dark
All alone and wide awake
Come and find me
I'm empty and I'm cold
And my heart's about to break
Come and find me

I need you to come here and find me
'Cos without you I'm totally lost
I've hung a wish on every star
It hasn't done much good so far
I can only dream of you
Wherever you are

I'll hear you laugh
I'll see you smile
I'll be with you
Just for a while

But when the morning comes
And the sun begins to rise
I will lose you
Because it's just a dream
When I open up my eyes
I will lose you

I used to believe in forever
But forever's too good to be true
I've hung a wish on every star
It hasn't done much good so far
I don't know what else to do
Except to try to dream of you
And wonder if you are dreaming too
Wherever you are
Wherever you are

Hmm... Perhaps 'Darkest Hour', by Arlo Guthrie. In an oblique way, it sums up quite a bit of how I look at life, and it does so in a way that cheers me every time I hear it.

Or perhaps "Son of a Preacher Man", by Dusty Springfield... or even better, Collide's industrial noise-blare cover of it. I may not be a preacher's son, but it's still my themesong, especially when I'm feeling cyberpunk-ish. ;)

Oh, even better.... "The Ocean", by Dar Williams. Whether I see myself as the narrator of the song or their lover depends entirely on how I'm feeling that day.

I'm sure there's a million other songs in my collection I identify with, but I'll limit myself to three, or I'll be going on all night... :)

Well I don't have a partner at the moment..but my song is "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. I don't feel like typing out the lyrics here because i'm a lazy bitch, but everything in that song is so true about me. The first time I heard it I was blown away, I was like "goddamn, that's me!" ::sighs:: I have to listen to it now...

I really like this song by Hawksley Workman, because just the way he describes things is really nice.

"Stop joking around for one minute,
I'd rather cry right now.
And play the sad notes on the piano,
Let the rest of the band go home.

Cause i'll leave you until the morning,
Please be here until the morning,
Hold my hand until the morning,
Brings the light of day to our eyes.

And smell the burning leaves in autumn driveways,
We'll be out on the road to wait by supper.
And leave a lamp lit low,
Beside the window,
If you can mop up a waterfall...."

The third verse is my fave. I also really like a song called Bullets.

"You are every bit a soldier,
I won't forget you too soon.

Cause you've got pies in the oven all across the sea,
I'm just here fighting for our liberty,
Yeah, that and a cold glass of beer, yeah that's why i'm here.

And stealing coins is not really stealing,
When i'm with these boys,
Yeah we don't share feelings but we sure make noise,
Crashing on enemy walls, we crash till it falls.

And if i fall to taste the ground, and you hear that fire bell sound,
Well don't fear, it's just the bullets, bouncing off my helmet, don't fear...."

Good music, just nice to hear.

One of my fave songs of all time is probably Nine Inch Nails - Hurt.
I also like Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun, Black Sabbath - Sweet Leaf.
I don't think my boyfriend and I have a current song. We're not into pop music and sometimes it's hard to find a good metal love song, besides Type O Negative. :P

I know the pieces fit because I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering; fundamental differing.

Superbeast
Shriek the lips
Across ragged tongue,
Convulsing together.Sing
violently, Move the jaw
Cry aloud. Bound up the Dead
Triumphantly
The ragged they come and
The ragged they kill!
You pray so hard on bloody knees.
The ragged they come and
The ragged they kill!
Down in the cool air I can see.
Hey, Yeah - I'm the one that you wanted
Hey, Yeah - I'm your Superbeast
Hey, Yeah - I'm the one that you wanted
Hey, Yeah - I'm your Superbeast
Stir the limbs across the wrist,
Full possession of memory.
Bury me as a dog,
Icy hands surrounding me.
The ragged they come and
The ragged they kill!
You pray so hard on bloody knees.
The ragged they come and
The ragged they kill!
Down in the cool air I can see.
Hey, Yeah - I'm the one that you wanted
Hey, Yeah - I'm your Superbeast
Hey, Yeah - I'm the one that you wanted
Hey, Yeah - I'm your Superbeast
Shriek the lips
Across ragged tongue,
Convulsing together.Sing
violently, Move the jaw
Cry aloud. Bound up the Dead
Triumphantly
The ragged they come and
The ragged they kill!
You pray so hard on bloody knees.
The ragged they come and
The ragged they kill!
Down in the cool air I can see.
Hey, Yeah - I'm the one that you wanted
Hey, Yeah - I'm your Superbeast
Hey, Yeah - I'm the one that you wanted
Hey, Yeah - I'm your Superbeast

Dead I am the rat, feast upon the cat
Tender is the fur, dying as you purr...
Looking at my own reflection
When suddenly it changes
Violently it changes
Oh no, there is no turning back now
You've woken up the demon in me.

This song describes perfectly what I'm trying to find in my life

Artist: Westlife
Title: Flying Without Wings

Everybody's looking for a something
One thing that makes it all complete
You'll find it in the strangest places
Places you never knew it could be

Some find it in the face of their children
Some find it in their lover's eyes
Who can deny the joy it brings
When you've found that special thing
You're flying without wings

Some find it sharing every morning
Some in their solitary lives
You'll find it in the words of others
A simple line can make you laugh or cry

You'll find it in the deepest friendship
The kind you cherish all your life
And when you know how much it means
You've found that special thing
You're flying without wings

So, impossible as it may seem
You've got to fight for every dream
Cos who's to know which one you let go
Would have made you complete

Well, for me it's waking up beside you
To watch the sunrise on your face
To know that I can say I love you
In any given time or place

It's little things that only I know
Those are the things that make you mine
And it's like flying without wings
Cos you're my special thing
I'm flying without

And in this place I long to be
You'll be where it ends
I'm flying without wings
And that's the joy you bring
I'm flying without wings

"Oh Well" writen by fleetwood Mac' but my favorite is a cover by "The Rockets"

"Can't help it 'bout the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me too.
Oh wellllllll!
