Remember that question? I know most of us here are already "grown up" but what did you want to be when you were young? Maybe that dream became a reality, maybe you tossed it aside and got a better one, or maybe it's a work in progress. If you share, I promise I'll be your best friend (that bribe always worked when I was 6).

I've wanted to be so many things. When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a teacher. They received a lot of nifty gifts for Christmas. I was a little kid who wanted a job with cool perks. Next, I wanted to be an astronaut. I loved studying about planets, stars, and space travel. I still do but I realized that I'm not very good at math and science. I like the astronomy without all the calculations.

In middle school, I wanted to be a surgeon. What kind of surgeon? I have no idea. I was still a smart, ambitious kid back then. It seemed like a cool job. I don't know why I ever even thought about it. Now, whenever I see televised operations, I cringe and cover my eyes. I peek through my fingers trying to see. I don't mind blood but the whole slicing part I can't handle.

Two years ago, I was definite that I was going to be an architect or an interior designer. I was really interested in photography too. Those ideas lasted a year or two.

Now I have no clue. As much as I've changed my mind, I'm surprised I've had the same boyfriend for a while or that my hair has been the same color (okay, I admit, for about a year period, I dyed my hair every month).

Who's next? Hopefully someone a wee bit more focused than me.

Oh yes ... i'm more confused than you.

I first thought about what i wanted to be when i was 7, in grade 2. We had to write up a little bio and that was one of the questions. Of course, when you're 7, there aren't many options that you know of. Mainly firefighter, police officer and nurse. So i chose nurse.

From the time i was 10 up until just this year, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I love animals and they seem to like me ... And health and medicine have always been right up my alley However, my only chance at getting into vet school is to pull my marks up by 30%+, which isn't likely. So i'll be a little more realistic ...

Right now i'm going for nurse/midwife. I want to be both b/c i don't know if i want to work in a hospital type setting or open my own business where i can teach yoga and meditation to expecting mommies (what i really really want to do) and tell them of their options, such as waterbirths. It could be "The Belleville Birthing Centre" (if there isn't one already lol) It also couldn't hurt to be a nurse AND midwife. The more qualifications you have, the better off you are, right?

Cool topic.

I wanted to be a veterinarian till I was in about 7th grade, and then I wanted to be a writer. But of course my parents were all for my being a vet and writing on the side (gotta support myself, yanno), and so something wonderful (?) happened that got me out of it.

We went to an open house at the Texas A&M vet school. I went into an operating theatre to see a surgery. I smacked mysef down flat and out cold. End of veterinary ambitions.

Now I wanna be a writer. Ever read http://www.salon.com? I want to write for them, past the unsolicited submissions, I mean. Featuresy news stories, published daily online. Mmmmmm. Yummy.

I always wanted to be a smurf when I was little....it took my mom a long time to convince me that it just wouldn't work out.

I want to work in Advertising, I love to design stuff, like billboards, and I love to make up ideas for commercials. So anyway, thats what I want to be today! It will change tomorrow!

Oooh.. I went through so many.. originally I wanted to be a vet.. but I started thinking about having to put down peoples pets, and it made me too sad

So I decided I wanted to be a journalist.. but unluckily I got a teacher in third form (I think that's 8th Grade in the US) who told me that I was no good, and I'd never make it (so much for encouragement!).

I went through phases of wanting to be a teacher, a computer programmer, a chef, a bus driver.. I was an apprentice jockey at a racing stable for a few months, but was told I was too fat (52kg) to ever race professionally..

So I've settled on a plain old IT job.. which suits me just fine I'll figure out my next ambition when it gets boring here

Well, a ballerina, as most girls who took dance wanted to be. And a vet, a horse trainer, a nature preservist, a marine biologist (who doesn't want to be one of those?), and a myraid of other things.

Now, I want to be a writer, a photographer, or a psychologist. I wonder of I'll be any of those

My dad wanted to be a bear when he grew up. According to my grandma, it took him till about 10 to figure out that he couldn't be.

He gives pretty good bear hugs, though. =]

Well, since I'm not quite grown up yet, I've always wanted to be a scientist or a paleontologist. Or maybe a historian or an architecht. Sounds good to me. When I was little I wanted to be a vet. It seems that alot of girls wanted to be vets when they were younger.

I wanted to be a Siamese cat. Thirteen years on, I realise that that just couldn't have worked, and the Siamese girls I know are pretty dumb (still, they are very pretty), but I still like the idea. I think I also wanted to be a writer (science fiction, specifically), but I just don't have the concentration. Right now, I'm taking culinary training, may look into computer hardware training, and my friend thinks I should be a midwife.

I want to be a Macaroni-Penguin-Eagle! I've always wanted to be a bird... so I could fly! But I decided I wanted to waddle and slide down ice burgs and go "floop" into the water... hence my new breed: Macaroni-Penguin-Eagle!!

If I turn out to be a sucky flyer... I'll just jump from planes a lot and be a physcologist... LoL. But I've got a few years yet to figure it out

Honestly, i'm STILL stuck b/w midwivery/nursing and being a science (biology/chemistry) teacher. I dunno ... nursing seems more promising to me. And i'd really enjoy it more. Gotta have a 'plan B' tho

I want to be a journalist and I have done for about 5 years. Most of all, I'd like to be a war reporter. I want to show people things that they wouldn't see otherwise, and make them realise how lucky they are. So my ambition is to be a war reporter for the BBC, but I'll take any other journalistic job as long as it's not writing about flippin celebrities new hairdos cos that would be the most pathetic and useless job around.
When I was little I wanted to be a boy when I grew up and I thought it would happpen. I was gonna be called Jerry.

I have an interview for an internship for Travel and Tourism March 26 at 9:10am. I am excited, I just hope that I get to work in an airport. I love airports. Also I hope they let me do some work at the desk with the computers, I dont just want to stand there, Im not the type that likes slow paced all the time. Maybe once and awhile.

Hey, Smurfiekins, it's possible to do both the nursing AND the teaching....I had a bio teacher in HS who used to be a nurse. She said it was relatively easy to go from that to getting her teaching certificate. Then again, I don't know how that goes in Canadia. ;]

Interestingly enough, I always wanted to be a journalist. Yes, I was a very boring and geeky kid.

I love to write although I have recently discovered a new talent for bossing people around. So maybe I am more suited to be an Editor.

When i was in elementary, of course, after school, I would line up all my dolls and teddies and whatnot on my bed and along the floor and be their teacher! LoL

I wanted to be a teacher for the longest time, and that still sounds fun, but if i keep skipping school, I will know nothing to teach back to anyone...INCLUDING my dolls!!

I think a social worker sounds interesting. Im looking into that now..

Hey! some of us aren't grown up yet!

Once I was in kindergarten I decided that I wanted to be a marine biologist. No joke (hmmm, see I was strange since childhood). Here in Vegas there's a hote/casino and they have dolphins there. And every year my school would go there and we'd see the dolphins and feed them and watch the video of Squirt being born (he was about as old as we were at the time!).

Then I wanted to be a lawyer, because tat's what my mom wanted me to be. But then I had this revelation that I don't have to do what my mom wants me to and decided I want to be a pyschiatrist. I've also wanted to be a physical therapsit, plastic surgeon (not cosmetically). So my mom thinks I "Change my mind too often" but...notice that they all deal with helping people

I want to be a teacher and a writer. My grand plan is to find a really cool alternative public school in San Francisco(my favorite place). I'll teach English and Sex Ed. Yeppers, that's my plan. And of course, I'll keep writing poetry and maybe do some novels(as if that's a choice).

Lets see, I wanted to be a doctor, teacher, to a brain surgeon, to a heart surgeon, to an actress back to a doctor then to a movie director to and actress then to a family doctor, to a music producer then to anything that envoles music. That was all before high school !

Now I want to be either a singer, actress. If those don't work out then I want to be either a drama teacher or a choir teacher for high school. WSU has this thing where they'll put you through college for free if you teach in Kansas for three years. If you teach longer then three years they'll buy your house. That's a sweet deal!

When I was younger, I didn't think I'd ever be able to do anything that I couldn't do *then*. I thought it'd be cool to be a scientist or doctor or artist or whatever, but algebra was hard and thinking up experiments that had never been done before but that could be done was hard, and drawing realistic pictures was hard, and I figured all those things were just too hard. So I wanted to be a writer, because I'd been writing stories since I was three or four, and lots of people told me they were good. I was going to be a writer and have a whole lot of cats. My mom wanted to know, what if I married someone who was allergic to cats, and I said I'd ask them if they were on the first date, and if they were, I wouldn't go out with them. And of course, my boyfriend now is allergic to cats.

When I was a little older (10 - 13) I figured I'd be a computer game designer, since I liked computer games so much and programming was so much fun and writing was so much fun. And then when I was thirteen, I became interested in dolphins, and now six years later, I'm still on my way towards a career in marine mammal research. I know a lot about dolphins. I'm majoring in psychology and developing a good background in biology in case I want a degree in it later. I might take a year off and then it's on to graduate school for a doctorate, very possibly University of Hawai'i.

I'm also an artist, and certainly intend to make some money off of my work at some point. I'm going to write and publish a couple of books. I'm going to run a sex toys shop for a while, and I'm also going to be a "teacher" at a homeschooling resource center. Someday when I've got the qualifications, I would very much like to come back here and be a professor at New College. I would very much like to aquire the skills to do writing and translation in Hawaiian, although I don't know if I will ever be at that level, since I'll be competing with the kids growing up bilingual there now. Either way, if I do end up in Hawai'i for graduate school, you can bet I'll be taking advanced Hawaiian courses my every free moment (there won't be many!). I'm going to build my own environmentally sound house (probably cob) on property that I own outright. Hopefully at LEAST ten acres. Haven't decided where yet, although obviously it has to be within a reasonable distance of the coast. Yes, I'm starting to save up for it now. I'm going to have a garden, chickens, rabbits, maybe even goats. I'm going to have one or two children the old fashioned way and adopt the rest and none of them will have to go to school if they don't want to. I'm going to travel a lot. And I'm going to build a sailboat.

In the mean time, I really need to study some organic chemistry.

Lem ~ I know!! My science teacher last year was a nurse as well ... I could do both, but i don't know if i could stand being in school that long

My biggest dream was always to either be a singer or a writer. Then at one point I wanted to be a horse trainer, on the u.s. equestrian team (I dream big), or own a horse stable. And then I started skiing and wanted to teach skiing forever and race. And then out of high school I suddenly wanted to be a masseuse because I didn't know what I wanted to do and someone suggested being a masseuse, it sounded fun.

Now I am convinced I want to be some sort of counselor or psychologist, I actually thought about it all through high school since I love helping people. Now that choice is definite and I'm happy with my decision, it's the first time I've really felt sure about something in my future. But somehow I still plan on doing singing on the side as well as teaching skiing....I figure if I only live once I want to do as much as I can.

Growing up, I wanted to become a pharmacists (how utterly boring!)...and then I dreamt of becoming a writer until I decided that law was what I wanted to do....So now I am growing up to become an Intellectual Property lawyer. Just a year to go. Yippee.
Don't think I'll only do this, though. Who knows, who knows, writing is still high onm yagenda...so we'll see, we'll see.

Growing up I wanted to be a marine biologist. I was obsessed with underwater documentaries and always getting in trouble for collecting algae, crabs, periwinkles and other little animals and plants you find in tidepools. They kind of smell after being hidden under your bed for a few days.

However, due to my brain's inability to swallow calculus I was not accepted into the science program at university. So here I am four years later, working on a portfolio to get into art college. I am thinking of majoring in visual communications and minoring in ?. I've a diploma in digital media so I don't want to minor in that. Maybe textiles.

I want to do something FUN for a living. I already design logos, stickers and t-shirts for bands, maybe I could capitalize on that. Or illustrate books and zines. Or design super-fabulous furniture for people with big bums.

When I was little I wanted to be a doctor. That's sort of one of three 'traditional' desires isn't it? Doctor, teacher, lawyer. I wanted to be a teacher for a while in elementary school. I wanted to be a dancer till I realised there was more to dance then spinning. I did take ballet for 8 years though and modern for two. I then decided I wanted to be an actor, but soon realised that I HATE auditions! You see acting is fun, but I don't love it enough to do it. I wanted to be a psychiatrist for a while, an obstetrician and then I went to the librarian thing. THen I thought I wanted to teach at university (be a prof).

This year I have no idea what I want to do! I'm thinking of majoring in History and maybe going into the foreign service. The problem and yet at the same time, the wonderful thing, is that there are so many options! I do know what I want to do in the next couple of years though. I want to go to China next summer (on a educational program), and when I get my BA I want to teach ESL abroad for a year so i can travel. I then think I want to get a Masters degree. Who knows where I'll end up! IT's kind of exciting and yet scary .
