I was recently invited to a meeting called "Happy Healthy Women: not just survivors", which is about advocating for the long term care of survivors of sexual violence. I'd not really had a chance to think about these issues before.

If people are ok to talk about this...What makes you happy and healthy, not just a survivor? What kind of long term care and support would you like to have from those around you?

"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare."

That's seriously fantastic. Obviously, not everyone will need long-term help, but I also often feel like crisis-based services aren't enough, and can also send a message -- unintentionally -- that one only needs help getting through the immediate aftereffects of trauma. Getting out of the woods, as it were, which is really only the initial step in a long process.

While I'm far from all of this personally, given my age and when my assaults happened, it would have been great to have some resources about managing sexuality and relationships, about what it means to be a survivor and how to really cultivate that strength, how to connect with other survivors and how to talk about both my assaults and my healing process. I learned most of that on my own, which was okay, but I think it would have been a lot better to have some long-term guidance and support in those areas.
