I've been with my boyfriend for a year and 8 months now. We've come to the point where we know our lives are going in seperate directions. We've changed as people and I'm pretty sure its time to end it as civally as possible.

So here's my question. How does one go about this? We've really become best friends and don't want to lose the friendship, although we both know things will change. Do you go out, have a last dinner, to bring closure? Stop contact for a while then start talking again? Attempt to keep things relatively the same? I know it will be awkward at first, and moments when one of us will want a kiss or something, I'm just trying to figure out the best way.

Any suggestions?

Usually, you feel it out as you go.

Because all relationships are different, there's not one good way to go about it for everyone.

So, how about starting to talk now about how you both want to do this? It's often wise to take a little bit of time apart, just so you each can process your own stuff, adjust your headspace to get used to thinking of the other person as a friend rather than a boyfriend/girlfriend. But if you both want to nurture a friendship, go ahead and talk out how you'd like to do that, set up some boundaries and communcation tools, etc.
