Hi my girlfriend is looking to skip her period on ortho tricyclen lo because of a vacation. She has done it before with some minor spotting and the period was delayed by a couple of weeks. She spoke to her doctor today and doc said no problem just start taking the next pack without taking the placebo pills. Doc also said no reduction in effectiveness.

I am aware this could result in some spotting cause of different hormones (my gf thinks it may not happen cause it didn't last time) but I am curious if this affects effectiveness at all? It seems like no but I would like to be sure [Smile]

Why are you not trusting the information from her doctor?

Her doctor is correct: so long as no one is skipping the active pills, or taking a placebo pill break of longer than seven days, this has no impact on effectiveness.

But if you are concerned about pregnancy, as you have been in the past as well as today, the easy answer to any of this -- and the best way to prevent pregnancy -- is dual contraception: using two methods, not one, so adding something like condom use. Looking at your post history, it seems like stepping it up here and starting to use condoms would likely leave you feeling a lot more secure.

Spotting, btw, when this happens, isn't because of different hormones. It's because even on the pill, uterine lining still builds up each cycle and often will still need to shed itself some.
