might be a stupid question but if i slept next to my boyfriend and recently he'd came on me, is there a chance i might pick some sperm on my fingers and put it in myself whilst asleep?

basically we messed about and i gave him a handjob the other night, then i fell asleep pretty much immediately afterwards...i was awake afterwards for maybe five minutes max, if that. there will i think have been sperm on the bed covers and on my hands a bit. i was wearing tights as i slept...i just don't really know what happens when you sleep. do you touch yourself? could i have touched myself with sperm on my hands?

the reason i ask is i'm scared i'm ovulating...its the right sort of time for it and i've had unexplained bleeding, enough to mess about 3 or four pads for two days and now brown stains, so not like a normal period which is a bit heavier...i'm worried this is ovulation bleeding as i have pains in my lower abdomen since 8:00 last night (its 4 o clock now).

i cant find any reliable information on how strong ovulation bleeding can be, i've never had it before.

i took EC recently so maybe its just an early bleed? or early period? but why is it lighter than usual? i'm so scared i'm ovulating right bang when i've maybe put myself at risk. this all seems ridiculously paranoid but i can't stop imagining the possibility of it. help!!

p.s this happened the day i started birth control pill, thinking the bleeding was my period, if that changes anything...

Ejaculate dries up within like 10 to 15 minutes of exposure to air. So even if you had had ejaculate on your hand, it would not have been viable for very long. Plus, you were wearing pants, so it's unlikely that you actually touched your vulva. And sperm cannot get through clothing. And lastly, transferring sperm from one place to another does not pose a pregnancy risk - it takes genital contact for that. So, in short, you have not had a risk.

Ovulation bleeding is very light spotting that can happen for some women when the egg implants in the uterus.

Also, if you are on the pill and taking it correctly, you aren't ovulating at all. That's part of how the pill works.

So if you are having spotting now, it's very likely that this is due to the EC that you took. Spotting and early/late withdrawal bleeds are very, very common side-effects of taking EC.

thankyou so much for your response! i LOVE this site. i've spent the whole day shifting between thinking my concern was deadly serious and feeling a bit silly, so its a real comfort to have reassurance.

so do you think the bleeding was not my period? if so have i started my pill at the wrong point of my cycle and do i need protecting for a bit before i'm safe? i needed a few pads for two days and then a pad for a bit of mess on the third day. now its basically dried up, though i had cramps some of today and bloating...

"Also, if you are on the pill and taking it correctly, you aren't ovulating at all. That's part of how the pill works. "

just to clarify, i haven't been 'on' the pill as such, i had only started my first (ever) pill that day, because i thought i was starting on my period and could therefore start my first pack, so my ovulation concern is me wondering if it was already too late for the pill to stop ovulation because the bleeding was part of the ovulation process...though obv if i haven't had a risk this is irrelevent! just wasn't sure if i made that clear enough for the second post to make sense....

If you just started the pill, it's also likely that the pill is messing with your period, and that's why your bleeding is looking different from what you are used to.

But regardless of when in your cycle you start the pill, it's always a good idea to use back up for an entire month before relying on it alone.

do you think the blood flow could be being depleted by the pill as its starting to kick in? like if i hadn't started the pill it might have gone on strong for longer? can the pill have an effect that fast?

i've been reading up on ovulation bleeding and it sounds like something much more subtle than what i've had, which i think is more than spotting though pretty weak for a period. its straddling a difficult fine line though. to be honest the main reason i thought it might be ovulation related is it is the right time of month and because i have these weird twinges on one side.

my doctor advised 14 days to be safe, because my 'period' or whatever it was is 2 weeks early. i'm reluctant to wait a month but will do if you advise that as safer....definitely safety first. he'd be a terrible father!
