my boyfriend and i had sex once in the beginning of july and maybe 3 times this past week... we used a condom every time and there were no tears or breaks. but my period is late this month...about a week late. it should have come last week but so far it hasnt. my cousin told me that condoms have tiny holes in them so sometimes people get pregnant even when they use them...is this true? also, what are some reasons that my period is late this month, other then a potential pregnancy risk? i was just coming down with mono when we had sex in the beginning of the month, so could the mono be making it come late or something? i don't know what to do...

If there were no breaks or tears in the condom, you can assume that you were protected from both pregnancy and STIs.

If you're worried, you can take a pregnancy test. Tests are accurate 10-14 days after the risk or the first day of a missed period. Since your period is late, you can take a test now.

Sometimes stress or being sick can cause a late period. It does'nt sound like you have a pregnancy risk here, so i think it'd be okay to wait a little longer.

(And no, condoms don't have tiny holes in them- this is a myth spread by those who would want to discourage condom use- ie, abstinence-only sex-ed teachers, for example.)

so you think my late period is most likely from the mono or being stressed or probably a combo of the two?

We encourage teens to be open and honest with their parents, so I'd highly encourage you to tell her about your sexuality activity. If that isn't an option, something like "Mom, I'm interested in learning about my options when it comes to birth control, in case I ever decide to have sex with my boyfriend. Can we talk to my doctor about it?"

Granted, your parents are pretty smart, so it'll be hard to really ask without them suspecting, as many parents do, which is why we support honesty.
