If one develops a cyst while on the pill does that mean the pill is not working and one should use a secondary backup method?

No, developing a cyst while using any birth control method doesn't mean that method isn't working.

So, unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you can assume you have the level of effectiveness the pill offers and then decide, as usual, if that's enough for you on its own or not.

I suspect I may have one although the only symptom that has occurred is slight pressure on this one spot, off and on. Sex isn't painful as well. My mom advised me to wait it out and see before scheduling an appt although yesterday there was a situation in which I had sex and there was a period of time where a condom wasn't used so I would consider it withdrawal and the pill. I'm unsure if I should take plan b in case this is an ovarian cyst. I have not missed any pill and am unsure if I should consider my pill fully effective while I wait for an appt!

I'd not adjust anything figuring you have a cyst (especially since cysts often come and go on their own with no problems) until you are actually diagnosed. I'd also not assume you have one.

Plan B is less effective than your pill, so if you are already using your pill properly, there actually isn't any more protection it can give you that you don't already have, especially since it also does the same thing your pill does, only less effectively.

Again, I have never seen anything to suggest developing a cyst is any indication the birth control pill is less effective.

Are you already up-to-date with your sexual healthcare, like pap smears and STI testing? If so, then based just on feeling slight pressure in one area sometimes, I don't see a need for an exam. If you're not current with those things, though -- especially if you're having sex without condoms -- then you need that healthcare anyway, so now may be a good time to get them, and then you can ask about this concern, too.

yes I'm up to date with STI testing and pap smears, last pap smear was less than a year ago I believe. Around rhat time frame!I'm very conscientious about sexual health! there's very light spotting but that was before this pressure occurred and my obgyn said it was probably due to my sudden change in weight.

I'm going to wait it out a bit and see how things go and if this will resolve itself! until then, as long as I take my pills every day at the same time then I can count on its full effectiveness regardless if this could or could not be a possible cyst?
