Just wondering if performing oral sex on a woman can cause a urinary tract infection.

The only reason I ask is because occasionally I have some inflammation around my wisdom teeth that, if severe, is treated with antibiotics.

If I perform oral sex on my girlfriend, would there be a significant risk of mouth bacteria causing a urinary tract infection?

My understanding thus far from my own research is that UTIs are usually caused by one or two specific kinds of bacteria found nearby that part of a woman's anatomy, such as e coli.

I know as a policy you would recommend barriers such as dental dams, but since we have had STD testing, we prefer not to.

I'm so sorry this post was missed, EC.

Any kind of sexual activity can potentially cause UTIs, as any kind of bacteria - not just from trouble with our teeth (though that sounds painful, I'm sorry you're going through that) can become pushed into the urinary tract. One way to help prevent this is to make sure we urinate before any kind of sex involving our vulvas.

There's also some more info on this in our preventing UTIs walkthrough:

Out, out, damn UTI!
