I had unprotected sex on a Monday and that Wednesday I got my period (and it lasted until about Saturday) and then the following Monday I had to start antibiotics because I got an infection. Is there any risk of getting pregnant here? I know with antibiotics you can get pregnant even when you're on the pill and even if the unprotected sex was a few days before/after taking the medication because sperm stays in the bod for a few days.. but did I give sufficient enough time before I started taking the pills or does getting my period omit that rule?

What I mean is I know sperm can last for up to 7 days (I think?) in a woman's body.. technically I started the antibiotics exactly a week after unprotected sex. But sperm can't last if you get your period in between, right? I'm kind of nervous but I couldn't wait any longer to take the antibiotics. Help!

You just want to back up from the time you started the antibiotics until the end of your pill cycle. You don't have to worry about what happened before you started the antibiotics.

Why is it that only the days in which you take the antibiotics are the ones that matter? I'm just curious. Is has no effect on the fact you may have unprotected sex a week before/after the medication?

I know this may sound stupid, but does the 7 day sperm rule not even apply if you get your period in between, if you've had unprotected sex before your period. Meaning is everything flushed during your period (sperm) or is this something that can carry on into the next month and potentially be a risk?

Figured I'd ask :-)

Sex a week before was already covered by your pill before you took the antibiotics. While yes, sperm can live in your body for up to a week, that's less likely for someone using a combined pill whose vaginal discharges are different (and are part of how your pill works), and whose ovulation is being suppressed.

You're right: it's less likely for sperm to survive in the vagina during menstruation because of the change in the vaginal environment.

Just FYI, I want to make sure you know that the jury is still out with antibiotics and OCPs. Right now, there's about equal evidence they can impact effectiveness with evidence they don't or can't. Because of the evidence they can, backing up is suggested, but it's probably just not something to get TOO worried about, okay?

And I'd personally say that if it does feel like a super-big deal, it might be sound to figure that you might want to just back up your pill with condoms most of the time, period, if you get me.
