I know that you can dilute a pregnancy test by drinking too much water but is it still possible to dilute a pregnancy test this way if you are farther along and there's more of the hormone in your body?

If you're more than a few weeks in, drinking water should not effect a pregnancy test.

Did you see the doctor about the pains you were having? If they ran tests and took blood and/or urine, you may have been tested for pregnancy then.
