I was wondering what long term effects were for birth control. I have been on birth control for 7-8 years and I am only 22. I have heard that coming off you can be temporarily infertile. Also "other" people have said that their doctor told them that your ovaries can actually shrink from not releasing an egg for so long, decreasing your chance of ovulating and being able to conceive?

It is typical for some women coming off the pill to find that it takes their bodies a little while to get back to a normal fertility cycle. Some users of OCs do find it takes them a bit longer to become pregnant when trying than some women who have not been using OCs. However, I would not call that temporary infertility, and to boot, some women become pregnant with no delay after ceasing OC use (and some DURING OC use, so).

The pill is one of the most studied medications we have in the world, and is known to be very safe and unlikely to cause any kind of problems, around fertility or otherwise, with long-term use.

And this business about shrinking ovaries because of not releasing eggs? No real cause for concern there. I've seen a couple studies about vascular degeneration of ovaries and oral contraceptive users, and they tend to show no real difference with that between OC-users and non-OC users.
