I just got from the OB-GYN and was informed that my blood pressure was higher now (almost 139/98!!).

This is my 6th month on Loestrin24, and 3 months ago my blood pressure was 122/56. So this is surprising to me.

What causes blood pressures to rise in women who take birth control?

What are the risks involved?

What could happen if I didn't stop taking the birth control?

and if I'm taken off the pill, what other options can I do for birth control besides using a condom?

It's the progesterone in the pills which can cause that effect. So, the first thing a doctor might suggest -- if this keeps up -- is to just find a pill type with lower levels of progesterone. Your doctor should also be asking you questions to determine if your BP rise is about your birth control at all, like asking about changes in diet, weight gain, stress levels, etc.

But I'd expect them to just keep an eye: your BP right now is not yet excessively high, just higher than you're used to, and your previous systolic BP was already in the prehypertension range.

If that doesn't do the trick, then you'll want to look at methods which are progesterone-free, in other words, at non-hormonal methods. The risks of elevated blood pressure are about increased risk of stroke, kidney failure, heart disease and heart attack, in short.

Here's the start of the tool for finding which of those is a best fit for you: http://www.scarleteen.com/birth_control_bingo_whats_the_right_non_hormonal_method_for_me
