My sister has been getting cold sores since she was around 11 or 12. Tonight, we accidentally mixed up our drinks, and I used her straw. She currently has a sore. She told me she "doesn't put her straw on the sore because it would hurt".

Am I at risk? I mean, afterall, her husband does not get cold sores and he definitely comes into a lot of contact with her mouth.

Hi babybear- Since you've shared a drink with someone who has an active cold sore, you are at risk for contracting Herpes Simplex Virus: Simplex I.

There are two kinds of herpes: HSV-II, or genital herpes, and HSV-I, or oral herpes. HSV-I is the one that causes cold sores.

You can learn more about HSV-I in this "Ask a Sexpert" question as well as in The STI Files: Herpes.

Even though you've had a risk, this is no guarantee that you'll contract HSV-I. For the future, attempt to avoid sharing drinks with or kissing anyone who has or may have an active cold sore.
