What are the pros and cons of skipping your period by skipping the sugar pills and automatically started a new pack?

I know a few people that skip every second period doing this.

I just started university and am still pretty stressed, and I am supposed to start my period Thursday, argh, lol.

So what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Well, there is still no long-term testing on what doing so will or can do per your body and health in the long-term, nor any testing that has been done expressly on younger women doing this. For that reason (and a few others) we don't generally endorse this (especially given that for most women on the pill, periods are so much lighter, shorter and less crampy anyway, that it's not like a withdrawal bleed is a huge intrusion).

The studies thus far (last I checked, the longest one was for a two-year period), tend to support and endorse skipping periods so long as a women still has at least four each year.

If you're dead-set on doing this, yes, it may or may not result in a lack of bleed for that cycle. You may indeed skip the period, but you may still have some unpredictable spotting later on in your cycle. Or, it may not result in the bleed being skipped at all. It's basically impossible to predict.

Thank you for the information. I was curious as to how it all worked!

I do have a lighter period, but I have mild cramping for at least two weeks before hand. I have three monthes left before I try a new pill that will hopefully get rid of the cramping.

I've just gotten into a nice little schedule, and I know my period is going to screw it up [Razz]

Two weeks beforehand and throughout?

That's pretty darn unusual, certainly for someone not on the pill, but even more so for someone ON the pill. And if the cramping is happening for two weeks, skipping periods isn't likely to help, because the way the pill works, there shouldn't be any big hormonal changes in those two weeks to CAUSE cramping.

Have you talked to your OB/GYN about that cramping? If not, I'd strongly encourage you to do that, because that's something they should be looking into with some depth, particulary since given you're on the pill, this may well not be effects of PMS/periods/withdrawal bleeds at all, and you'd want to be sure they be on the lookout for things like PCOS or endometriosis as well as other issues.
