If you mesntruate, your hymen already has micro-openings that are allowing your menstrual flow through, at the very least.

How much it's eroded past that varies a lot from person to person, but in most cases, it's pretty flexible, thin tissue that you can move aside to use tampons with. A feeling of "tightness" is more often about nerves and lack of lubrication than it is about hymen issues (not always, but more often than not).

So, best bet? Take a few times and feel things out with your fingers and some lube. Look at your vaginal opening with a hand mirror as you do that so you can get a good sense for what is where. If your hymen is mostly intact and does not have any wider openings (which, given five years of menses and general activity wouldn't be the most common), or you can't comfortably get to a point where you can slide a finger into your vaginal opening, then you may have to wait for tampon use a little longer.

If you can do that, then you can try tampons: there's nothing you need to worry about harming.

Different women masturbate in different ways, the majority primarily with clitorial stimulus.

But if you mean you insert fingers or other objects vaginally, then there's no reason to believe your hymen is fully intact (it may even be close to fully eroded at this point) and something that's a barrier to tampon use.

So, if you have tampons, just use a little lube with them and fiddle until you feel out how insertion works best for you. For some women, standing with one foot up on the toilet works best, for others, squatting or laying down: what works best for you is just something you have to feel out by experimenting a bit.
