So here's the problem:
My best friend has a hymen that makes it difficult to even use tampons. She feels she is ready to have sex, but her body is obviously not. What can she do for this? (and should I be able to convince her to go to a gynacologist, what should she tell them/ask them?)

If the problem is actually an unusually tough hymen (rather than muscle tension or nervousness, which can also cause problems with tampons), then a gynecologist will be able to treat this - by advising her on how to stretch the hymen gradually, or, if necessary, by "snipping" the hymen under a local anaesthetic.

She should go to the gynecologist and explain just what you've said here: that it's difficult for her to use tampons and she's worried that it will cause problems when she has sex.

They will be able to examine her and advise on what the problem is and what can be done.

how do you know when it does break. Can it break while doing anything else besides sex?

Well, generally, the hymen gradually stretches or erodes over time - it doesn't "break" in a big dramatic way.

It can be eroded by lots of things - exercise, masturbation, tampon use - and of course some women are born without a hymen to begin with.
