I've used the Today Sponge a couple times before with no problem--I generally use it as "back-up" on days I feel like I've been a bit too late with taking the Pill and such. The other night, I slipped in the sponge, my boyfriend and I had sex, and then I went to sleep. About eight hours later when I woke up, I attempted to take it out and after fumbling around for the string I pulled out only a tiny portion of it! It took about ten minutes, but after finger-sweeping quite a bit I managed to get the rest out, about six clumps of different sizes (and I checked again the next couple times I went to the bathroom to make sure it was all out).
My question is, what would make it crumble into pieces like this? We didn't have particularly rough sex, nor do I have fingernails that would rip the sponge while attempting removal or anything. I suspect I might not have wet it enough before insertion, but is there any other reason this would happen?

...you could have just gotten a bunk sponge.
In the future, why not just use condoms for backup? They're more effective anyway.
