Hi Scarleteen,

I have two questions.

1) Could having a bad cold affect your period?

(I have a really bad cold and I'm taking OTC meds.)

2) Does the pregnancy hormone that pregnancy tests look for, have a smell to it?

1) Not directly, but anything that stresses out your body that throw your cycle out of whack.

2) Not that I know of. At any rate, you can't tell if someone is pregnant or not by sniffing them .

I'm going to take a wild leap and guess that you're asking the second question because your urine smells funny.

Some medications can make your urine smell different. Being properly hydrated has an effect on this, too. Some people have a strange smell associated with their urine when they eat asparagus; see here and here. Some diseases, rarely, can cause urine to smell strange.

Pregnancy, though, doesn't have an effect on the smell of your urine, at least not to a human. I'm guessing that some dogs may be able to tell, based on this, but that's not exactly helpful to us at the moment:

The drugstore home pregnancy test is really a Good Thing.
