I'm a counsellor at a Web site that helps teens. From time to time we get asked stuff on sex. This time I got a question I have no scientific info on and nor can I answer. I promised the person I would go to a book or source that knew.

The kid wrote us and asked what causes or why do guys have morning erections? The person explained these as more erect or different than regular ones and wanted to know why it is like that.

I can't answer as I have no data on that.

The old explanation was that it was caused by a full bladder. Newer, and (to me at least) more plausible is that they're caused by hormonal fluctuations during sleep cycles. Which is to say, at certain points during sleep, hormonal levels are higher, and that triggers a stiffy. However, I don't know this for certain, and I don't believe there is a completely proven cause.
