Some people swear by things like hot water bottles or heating pads (put 'em on your back or your stomach, whichever feels better), yoga or other gentle stretching exercises, and orgasm (orgasms can cause your uterus to contract and relax rhythmicly, which -- odd as it may sound -- can be very helpful in relieving menstrual cramps).

Also, if your period is very irregular, you might want to consider going on birth control pills (even if you're not sexually active) as they regulate your menstrual cycle and usually help relieve cramping as well.
Hope this helps!
