ok....i'm genetically a girl, and i identify my gender as woman. pretty normal stuff. my bf is a transvestite so i have an interest in gender identity issuse. i stumbled across this site: http://eval1.crc.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/bem-survey.cgi?show=1&id=9999
a bem sex rolls test, and took it. and got this back:
Thanks for completing the survey.
Your Femininity Score is 4.65.
Your Masculinity Score is 5.55.
You are sex-typed in the masculine direction.
this is kind of puzzling to me, as i've never identified as masculine. i was wondering if this test is just screwy, or if my idea of what it means to be a girl is just way off from what society expects form me. what do the rest of you think of this test?

Thanks for completing the survey.
Your Femininity Score is 5.45.
Your Masculinity Score is 3.8.
You are sex-typed in the feminine direction.

I would have to read more about what the test measures, but I feel that it seems like they're assigning certain traits to "masculine" and "feminine" and then going by how much you identify with those traits.

so yeah, 'rin, you might just ID more with the traits they're labelling as masculine.

Well, I took it, and I had a 4.75 for femininity, and 5 for masculinity. This, according to the survey, means that I am androgynous. Ummmm...no? What it means is that I am my own person, regardless of traditional male or female traits and roles. Running through the test, I could tell right off the bat which properties were going to be considered "male:" acts like a leader, competitive, agressive, analytical, etc., and "female:" flatterable, affectionate, shy, cheerful, and so on. I am a female, I identify as a female, and if I am willing to stand up for my opinion, take risks, make decisions, or take the lead, I don't see how that makes me any less feminine. In fact, some people would say I'm too feminine! This isn't a test for femininity or masculinity, it's a test of stereotypicality. Femininity and masculinity are not objective; no yes-or-no test will ever be able to determine them.

Ah, found it.

If you go to this page of psychology lecture notes, you can see the traits grouped into masculine, feminine, and neutral. http://www.staffs.ac.uk/schools/sciences/psychology/coursematerials/inddiff/hout4.htm

Interesting. I wonder why they grouped the traits the way they did, but I don't have time to keep researching. Anyone want to and report back?

I got "near feminine" too. Which is pretty much what i expected.

But i really wouldn't rely on an online test to tell me how masculine or feminine i am.

I would not take this test too seriously. Most questions were repeated about three times using slightly different wording. Just for a laugh I took it too:

Thanks for completing the survey.
Your Femininity Score is 4.6.
Your Masculinity Score is 3.5.
You are sex-typed in the feminine direction.

I dont see why you have to be dominant to be masculine.

No not true at all. I just tend to be a bit unconventional.

Femininity: 3.9
Masculinity: 4.45
Sex typed as near-masculine.

Funny, but when I did the Gender Test at The Spark (a test ONLY meant to be taken in a light-hearted way) my results told me that I was "definitely male". In spite of that I've always felt quite comfortably female. Gender is such a funny human construct.

Your Femininity Score is 5.4.
Your Masculinity Score is 3.4.

Well, both this and the Spark test said I was female. (Although, I told the Spark test it was wrong, even though it wasn't, just to screw up its ideas of what's feminine/masculine). I'm so boring. What's a girly girl like me doing moderating this forum anyway?

Your Masculinity Score is 6.2.

No kidding.

This and the Spark test said I was definitely a guy. Cool. I'm technically, physically female, but I think I would show up as a guy on my girly-like days too.

I took a class in university where we examined this test. Wish I remebered what I learned about it beyond that it was a properly constructed survey based inventory where the items where determined by previous studies. You take 100 random people and ask them which characteritics match which gender and then you have a basis for the inventory. Most psychological research is done this way.

Unfortunately, you have to take samples because beyond government census you can not poll populations.

The reason there were similar characterisitcs is to elimnate people who cheat or give biased answers.

Here are my results.

Thanks for completing the survey.
Your Femininity Score is 5.15.
Your Masculinity Score is 4.65.
You are sex-typed as near feminine.
