Hello everyone!

I've got a question concerning 'feminine cleansing cloths' and similar products. I feel a bit silly posting this, but I really feel like I need an explanation on them.

You see, I recently got and treated a yeast infection (such annoying things, they are!). When I told my grandmother, whom is the major female figure in my household, she just bought this package of Summer's Eve cleansing cloths. When I saw them sitting there on my bedroom desk, I inquired why she bought them for me. Unfortunately, she gave me the "Because you are a lady," explanation and refused to answer any more of my questions.

This also happened when she bought me my first bra (which was in 3rd grade, when I didn't need one at all) and she made me wear it every day. I felt very left out and uncomfortable with the whole concept for the longest time. Now that I'm in my late teens, I feel that such explanations shouldn't be avoided. My grandmother is an extremely old-fashioned person, so that might explain it.

So I feel a bit uncomfortable whenever I look at the package lying there in my room. I don't want to use them until I get a sufficient explanation. lol I read the package, but I really don't feel like I really need them. . . .

Your slighly embarrassed and grateful reader,
Amanda

Hi Amanda!
As long as you take care of yourself (showering regularly, for example), you have no need for these cloths.
Your grandmother may have been exposed to the idea that vaginas are naturally dirty places (which is now known to be false). This idea led to things like douching and cloths for "personal care".
We know better now, so no need to use these products. As far as dealing with your grandmother, you might consider sharing some of Scarleteen with her and explaining that these kinds of products can actually cause yeast infections due to altering the balance of bacteria and yeasts.
Hope this helps!

Phew, thank you very much! [Smile]

Yes, my grandmother uses both those sorts of things, actually. I definately think that showing her some of the articles on here would be a good idea.

The only problem with this is that she considers sites that contain 'sexual content' to be inappropriate for me (despite the fact that I'm a legal adult). I remember when she saw this site on my Internet History and got mad at me. She doesn't want me to be exposed to such content until I'm married, which is actually quite sad. [Frown] I really want to help her realize that this is actually a very wonderful, informative web site that will benefit me in the future. I'm just not sure how to go about doing it.

I don't know if leaving the package of those cloths plus a printed article on her place at the table would offend her or not. . . I know I'd find it humorous, but still. . . .

Thanks again!
Amanda

How about a shared copy of Our Bodies, Ourselves? It might be a better approach to show her something which is very clearly (even though this is, too, but still..) all about women's health and sexual health rather than seeming to her to be all about s-e-x.
