i'm a bit paranoid because i've just recently begun using tampons and the other day, i had a tampon in for about 8 hours (maybe a little less) because i couldn't get another before that. it was a super absorbency tampon but when i took it out later you could still see the white fiber. i was wondering, is it possible i could have TSS? when would i feel the symptoms?

Generally, you won't feel the symptoms of TSS until the day after, and some of the symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, and fever. The condition is rare, however, (only about ten cases a year.)

To avoid the risk of TSS, it is suggested that you use the lowest useable absorbency for your flow, and that you change your tampon every three or four hours, or earlier as needed. So it's good to make sure you have some extra tampons with you. [Smile]

so is it very likely that i could have TSS since you should change a tampon every 3-4 hours but i didn't change it until a little before 8 hours?

Well, it's generally not recommended that you wait that long to change a tampon because they are excellent at harvesting all kinds of bacteria, especially when left in for that long. But if this was the other day and you have no symptoms of TSS, then it's safe to say you're okay. TSS is very serious, but also very rare, as well.

Like I said, if you haven't felt any symptoms at all, then you are probably okay. TSS is not something that is warned about because it happens frequently, (because that's certainly not the case) but because it's effects are severe.

I think you will be okay if you use tampons again within the next few days, just make sure you change them regularly.
