Did you mean "who won't become pregnant"?

We, and other people and organisations who talk about this in a medically accurate way, use two sets of percentages. Both sets have a baseline of "if 100 couples use this method of contraception, how many won't become pregnant over one year?"

The first set of figures is for perfect use. That means laboratory-perfect. For condoms, it's 98%: that means that in perfect use, 98 out of 100 couples will not become pregnant over 1 year, and 2 out of 100 couples will.

The second set of figures is for typical use: how people who mean to use the method actually typically use it. For condoms, that means sometimes not storing them or putting them on correctly, or not using one for all genital-to-genital contact, or sometimes not using one at all. The typical use effectiveness for condoms is 86%: that means that in typical use, 86 out of 100 couples will not become pregnant over 1 year, and 14 out of 100 couples will.

Just for comparison, for couples using no method of contraception, between 80 and 90 out of 100 will become pregnant over 1 year. For people in our users' age range, it's nearer 90.

Does that answer your question?

So if a couple uses a condom correctly and it does not break or has a leak the chances of that couple becoming pregnant is very slim?

That's correct.

For people who really don't want to become pregnant, we recommend using two methods of contraception, because with two methods together the chance of pregnancy is really, really tiny.

No, you should use one or the other of those two methods, not both.

Why is that? Is it because they may rub together and cause friction and break?
