My understanding of thinner condoms is that they both allow for better sensation and that thinner is actually better/safer in terms of breaking because there is less friction.

Recently someone challenged my saying that by asking "friction with what?" And also, that "isn't friction what you want?" as in, to make sex feel good. Is there anyone who can give me a physics answer on the safety of thinner condoms in regards to friction? [Razz]

Intercourse (and also oral or manual sex) are going to create friction no matter what: it's two parts rubbing together. So, thin condoms can't take that away, they can just make it much more likely for those activities to feel like the same level of friction that would happen without condoms is happening with them.

You can probably also appreciate that the level of friction matters here, physics-wise. Like, if we rub our hands together at one speed, they might feel a little warmer, whereas if we were to do so at another, or with even more pressure while moving faster, we could actually burn or tear our skin. Same premise here: a condom is made to withstand friction, but only so much. Way more than is typical with intercourse -- and a thicker condom will create more than a thinner one -- and breakage is more likely.

That help?
