This month on the 7th I started my period and my first pack of birth control pills. I read the leaflet and it said that if I started on the first day of my period, I was instantly protected. I ended my period on the 11th, a day or two after then I began having unprotected sex with my boyfriend.

I'm kind of a freak when it comes to getting pregnant, because I'm only 15, and I really can't afford it. So I looked up when you really should start having unprotected sex and I keep seeing it advised that I wait for a month. Could there be a possibility that I'm pregnant? I am on the 28-day pill pack of Zovia, if that helps. Thank you for your time.

So, it sounds like you waited one full week before you started having unprotected sex?

If you start on the first day of a period, you should be fully protected by the end of the first week, provided you take the pill as directed (same time every day, no late or missed pills).

We suggest waiting one full month to be extra sure and give the body plenty of time to adjust. But as you saw yourself in that leaflet, most brands of the pill say you're protected from the first day, and since you did start on the beginning of your period and waited a week, you're likely okay.

If you're really that concerned about pregnancy, you might consider always backing up with condoms, just to give yourself that bit of extra protection.

Thank you so much for answering my question. We've both agreed that using condoms along with the pill would be a good idea. Again, thank you so much for easing my mind
