I have been intimate with my g/f for about a year now and we recently decided to try having sex. Before we did so I wanted to try masturbating with a condom, just to make sure I knew how to put it on correctly. I was using a trojan magnum at the time since the regular condom (trojan as well) cut off my circulation the first time I tried. While the magnum seemed to fit fine and snug when I first put it on (nothing really noticeable left on the bottom), when I started masturbating the condom seemed to bunch up at the tip (as in fold upon fold of the condom just bunched up there). The condom did not come off or appear like it was going to, but I figured the bunching would cause extra friction that would probably cause the condom to break if I had sex. I then tried a regular size condom (durex this time) figuring that it may be the right fit and I just wasn't used to wearing them. I didn't feel like it cut off my circulation but it did bunch up again when I started masturbating, though not as much as the magnum did. Again, it looked like it fit fine when I put it on, no extra room at the base, no air bubbles or anything of the sort.

Do condoms just do that when you masturbate and not during sex? Should I try to get a smaller sized condom and see how that goes? Or is the bunching normal and I should just go ahead with it? I'm 4.5 inches in length, so I was pretty sure the regular one should fit.

Do you mean that the top of the condom, where space is left in the tip, is moving around?

When you're putting condoms on, are you rolling them down to the base of your penis, but only that much, letting any extra length stay rolled up?

No, the condom bunches up a bit above or right around the tip while I'm masturbating. There is no extra length after I roll it down from what I can tell. I check by seeing if I can easily unroll it a bit more, its difficult to do since there isn't much room to unroll it, but there never appears to be any extra space there/doesn't unroll further. I agree, that part sounds weird given the problem, its also why I'm so confused about this. I do notice that the condom rises a bit from the base to slightly above it when I'm masturbating, and maybe the extra part is coming from there?

It sounds like it's not doing anything that isn't typical or okay. The condom moving around a bit at the top, where there's space, is typical, tends to increase sensation, and will not make your condom likely to tear.

In fact, some condoms are expressly designed for there to be more movement around the head of the penis, as wearers tend to report that feels more pleasant.

You don't need to be concerned about condoms and friction, save for making sure the condom stays well-lubricated. Since lubed condoms tend to have very little on them, for partnered sex, we suggest having some extra lube around to use as needed.

Make sense?

That makes a lot of sense and its good to know that condoms are supposed to work that way. I'm still a bit concerned about the condom breaking though. Is there anything else I should/can do besides applying lube to insure the condom will not break? Also, is it okay to put lube on the inside of the condom as well?

Used properly, condoms actually break very rarely. This piece talks about that for you: http://www.scarleteen.com/blog/heather_corinna/2009/12/05/a_common_condom_misunderstanding

What doe we mean when we say used properly? Check it out: Condom Basics: A User's Manual

It's fine to put a drop or two of lube inside the condom before putting it on, you just don't want to use much more than that, as that can make a condom more likely to slip off. Most of the lube you'll use will go on the outside of the condom and/or on your partner's genitals.

Since receiving your answers I've been experimenting to see what size condom I should use. The g/f's in china for a few months so i have time and would rather be sure nothing will go wrong when she gets back.

I've found that a few times the condom came off, specifically when i put the lube on the inside. When I didn't put the lube on inside, the condom did not come off but I did notice it rising up from the base and bunching up at the top, similar to what happened when it did come off and thus, giving me the impression that if I continued it would have come off. I also noticed that there is a decent amount of extra space that I leave rolled up at the base (which I did not previously think was there).

I was thinking about trying a smaller condom (snug fit) to see if it had the same results, but wanted to ask on here first to see if the above is normal, if not, what type of condom should I be looking into and what does the fact that the condom is rising up and bunching up at the tip mean? As I said, i'm a bit terrified of something going wrong with the condom and the consequences if something does, so I want to make sure I do everything I can to preemptively prevent that.

Again, thank you for all the help. I really appreciate it.

If you're only putting a couple of drops of lube on the inside of the condom, then it shouldn't be slipping off. Nor should you end up with a lot of the condom still unrolled at the base when it's fully covering your penis, so it sounds like trying a snugger fit brand would be a good idea.

I finally got around to trying a snug fit condom. It felt very tight on me and I ran into the same problem as I did with the regular sized condom where the part of the condom on the bottom that did not unroll would rise up as described above. The condom did not come off and I did not use any lube.

I am mildly concerned that both the snug fit and the regular sized condom will come off during actual sex, or, that it will somehow fail to function properly. However, given that it happened with both the snug fit condom and the regular sized condom I am wondering if this is supposed to happen.

I realize that this is similar to questions I asked above but just wanted to verify if this is normal for condoms, as the responses I received when I continued to describe the situation seemed to change. Again, my main concern is the unrolled part of the condom at the base moving up to the top and the possibility of the condom malfunctioning (not protecting my partner during sex) or coming off as a result. I am also wondering if I am better off using the snug fit condom, which felt very tight, or the normal sized condom which felt more natural. Thank you again for your help.

Condoms can and do move around a bit during sex, but as long as they don't slip off, you're all good. It does sound like the snugger fit one was too tight for you, so if the regular-sized one felt good, go with that.
