My boyfriend and I have begun to discuss sex and everything that goes along with it, including birth control. We realize that we'll probably sleep together for the first time before the summer is out, so sex has become a major topic of conversation. Condoms are a non-issue: we'll use them, no question. I'm actually out to buy a box in a couple of weeks. I mentioned spermicide and the Today Sponge for me as extra protection, both of which were readily accepted. I've been doing lots of research on the sponge and am happy with what I have found, though the low effectiveness rate is a bit worrying.

Although I know the sponge already comes with spermicide already infused, I'd be fully comfortable using it adding more of my own. I have three questions:

1) How would I add more spermicide? Would I add it before I insert the sponge or afterward, or would I coat the sponge with it?

2) Would the added spermicide prove to be too irritating?

3) Is the kind of spermicide without the applicator available in the average drugstore, or would I have to buy it online?

Thanks in advance for the help. [Smile]

Given that spermicide is one of the least effective methods (which is why the sponge is, too), and that the sponge contains it, adding more actually would not likely provide you any extra protection. The sponge also puts out a good deal of liquid from the foaming it does, too, so any more spermicide beyond that you put in would probably just run right out.

Condoms + the sponge can be highly effective used together when both are used properly, over 97% in both perfect and typical use. If that 3% really bothers you, my advice would be to get a pack of Plan B. The only real issue with this combo is if a condom breaks or slips off despite perfect use, which isn't common, but if you had Plan B around, you could have something to address that if needed.
