I found this birth control sheet from the University of Maryland today and it suggests that if you have repeated breakthrough bleeding you should use a back-up method.

Does this mean breakthrough bleeding is a sign the pill isn't working correctly? I am nearing the end of my first pack of Yaz and have been spotting brown and occasionaly red everyday for a few weeks. I know it is very common for the first few months, so I didn't think anything of it. Now after seeing this I am worried my pill won't be protecting me. I am not sexualy active but would like to know that I am protected fully if I do have sex.

I've honestly never seen that recommendation before, nor is breakthrough bleeding known to be an indicator the pill isn't working. My assumption would be that put that there for incidents of breakthrough bleeding caused by missed or late pills or malabsorption of pills.

Breakthrough bleeding is very common the first few cycles, and we do always advise using a backup method for the first full cycle of pills regardless. But after that, so long as pills are being taken properly and on time, it should be fully effective. You can certainly cal your prescribing doctor if you want a second opinion, though.
