I have been on hormonal birth control for coming on about four years now, and I have never gained or lost any weight, on ANY prescrption I have taken (And I've taken a few).

If you want to check out a bit more about experiences our users have had using the pill, check out this topic:

I've been on Levlen 28 for about 9 months now, and I can definately say that I've gained weight. But, you know, I'd say that it's worth it. I only gained about 10lbs. and my periods are virtually worry and pain free now.

I think the reason we gain weight is because BC simulates pregnancy, basically, you don't ovulate. It keeps the level of your progesterone up which is what an embryo produces to maintain a pregnancy. Along with pregnancy comes those wicked food cravings and I get some pretty bad ones a couple days out of the week of my period. So, I eat a lot, all the time, so I gain weight.

But like I said, for me, it's worth it. I don't think I ever want to go off of my BC. I hated those cramps.

I've been on Lutera for about four months, and first I gained a few pounds, then lost double what I gained. Now it's kind of just gone back to what it was beforehand, now that my body's used to it, i guess.

As for other side effects, I had a few days initially where I was a bit crankier than usual and some oddball midcycle cramping, but nothing too bad. All others were good side effects: period time cut in half, cramping and ovary pain now managable, and of course, the birth controlling, ahaha.

I neither gained nor lost weight. Side effects vary from person to person, so you'll just have to see how you do. [Big Grin]

I'm on Othro Evra (the patch) and I neither lost nor gained weight. It did mess with my emotions for the first cycle, though.

Technically, I didn't really gain weight from taking the pill. I started taking it during college, so I was already gaining weight from eating differently and being out of my parents' house. (Mom's on the Atkins diet and won't allow real sugar, bread, pasta, salt, etc. in the house) I did notice my bra size went up about half a cup, though. I'm not sure if that was from the pill or from age.

Second month on the pill and I haven't gained weight but it feels like I've lost whatever muscle I had. However, the bright side is that my bra size has increased and my butt has gotten bigger LOL.

I started on nuvaring two years ago, and I actually lost weight (although I suspect it was due to other factors).

I read somewhere (and this is totally unverified; I can't even remember where I read it) that somebody recently re-evaluated the data from a lot of the studies that showed that estrogen/progestin BC makes you gain weight, and they realized that most of the women studied were tracked over a period of something like ten years - and it's totally natural for women to gain weight over the course of ten years, with or without meds, so those studies may have just been inconclusive.
