I started taking the pill exactly 7 days ago and haven't had sex during this time. When can i safely have sex without a condom? (though i am clearly aware of the other risks that follow unprotected sex). I have heard that I should wait up to a month after starting the pill before i may do so..please let me know if this is fact or fiction!

We recomend that you wait until you have completed one full cycle of pills before relying on them to be fully effective against pregnancy. So, finish this pack of pills, and once you start your next one, then you can rely on them for pregnancy protection.

And don't forget to stay up to date on your full STI screenings if you're going to stop using condoms. [Smile]

Thank you for the quick response. Although you have recommended that i finish one pack before having sex without condoms, should i be concerned if i do decide to do so within the next few days? I have heard from fellow friends that have done this after just a week of starting the pill and they have had no issues. I am not being pressured to follow through with having sex without condoms but I've been researching for days about this issue and cannot figure out a medical "yes or no" for when unprotected sex is 'allowed' after beginning the pill. I wish more sites or resources could clarify the approximate time the pill becomes active for me because i would like to be informed and certain that my friends are being safe as well! If you can let me know if i am at any risk for pregnancy because i want to have sex soon after starting the pill without protection or whether or not this is just an unwise decision, that would be genuinely helpful. Do results vary from person to person or is it a RULE that i should finish one full pack before making a decision?

The thing is, different women will react to the pill in different ways. So, it's possible you could be protected now, but it's also possible your body needs a little more time to adjust. It's not a "rule" exactly, it's just a good idea if you want to be more assured you're fully protected. And as far as your friends? There's no way we can tell for certain if their pills were effective after a week of taking them, or if they simply were lucky/just didn't become pregnant/whatever.

Make sense? There's no definite answer we can give you, but we recomend waiting a full cycle just to be the most safe you can be.
