hey, so im doing a project on the development and experiences of teen girls? and i need some videos or movies or documentaries on this topic. basically, films about what young girls go through as they grow up, the experience of female adolescence. anything on this topic would be useful really. thanks!!

Are we talking only documentaries here, or also other kinds of films? have a time-period the films were made in you're looking for? What about books?
Also, age-wise, it sounds like you're talking about, what, from around age 10 to 20? If so, can you maybe narrow that some? That's an awfully big period of time, especially at that time of life.

Well, the first thing that came to mind, since in another post you were asking about visuals, was Girl Culture, by Lauren Greenfield, a contemporary photography project about teen girls. It's pretty amazing, and might inspire some cool ideas.
Film-wise, some fictional, but real, films I can think of off the top of my head as goodies are: - Thirteen - Persepolis - Mean Girls - Easy A - Skipped Parts - Precious (though I vastly prefer Push, the original book, to the film) - Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants - The Breakfast Club - Raising Victor Vargas - Girlfight - Heathers -

There's an anime series and a movie based on it (and it's not a compilation film, it's a retelling of the story from the TV series using only new animated footage, not clips from the TV series) called Revolutionary Girl Utena, that I think may be of interest, it's not very documentary like and relies heavily on metaphor and abstraction, but it's really unique and compelling, it's a deconstructionist fairytale where the main character is a girl who would usually be the princess, but she wants to be a prince, and the guy who's the prince is actually a manipulative playboy, her best friend who's the girl she wants to rescue from her fate of being passed around as a bride to people who win her in duels is a persecuted witch, etc. I don't think the movie is as good as the TV series, which is quite long (39 episodes, 25 minutes or so each) considering you must have some sort of time constraint, but the movie is still worth seeing, though I must provide a TRIGGER WARNING
as there is a non-explicit (it's certainly not pornographic), but clear as to what is happening, scene of child rape (which is clearly viewed as a horrific act of abuse by the makers of the movie). The film was passed uncut with a 15 certificate by the BBFC.
I would also perhaps recommend But I'm a Cheerleader as while it is kind of fluffy it does look at the experiences of girls who are sent to those camps that try and make gay/lesbian/bi teens straight (of course, it doesn't actually make them straight).

For a queer angle, try Show Me Love (F***ing Amal). It's a Swedish film that tells a tale of young love in a realistic way and also touches on the difficulties of adolescence.

I haven't seen that film in an AGE, Marion. And it is so, so good.
