Just read it. It will open your eyes in so many ways, and I think anybody who has ever ventured onto Scarleteen (and also everyone else who has not) will benefit reading it cover to cover.

I'd like to second that. I haven't finished it yet but am listening to it as an audiobook and enjoying it so far. The author is from the UK but I think it's largely applicable outside the UK as well depending on the country)
