Not sure if this is the right spot, but AOL linked this interview with Cher's son Chaz who is in the process of his surgery. In this interview, Chaz talks about the things he has enjoyed on hormones and what he looks forward to. There are some nice photos of him and what looks to be his girlfriend or friend.
For a mainstream news source, I thought they did a pretty good job. They referred to him as Cher's son (in those words, not prefaced by "trans" or anything) and the message was positive.
It's kind of cool to have a t- man who is out and talking about his life who is in the celebrity world, at least a little bit.

I think it's pretty awesome that he's being open about this; I can't think of any other transmen who are well-known generally (not just in LGBT circles). It can't be easy for him to be out about this, I bet he's got a lot of haters to contend with. But if a young trans person comes out to their parents, and instead of immediately being lost and confused and potentially hostile, the parents can think 'Oh, like that Chaz Bono' and have a frame of reference, it can only be a good thing and will hopefully lead to greater acceptance and understanding.

I'm also really pleased that in that interview they used the correct pronoun. It's a really positive interview and I'm happy for him .

Thanks for sharing, Bonnie.N.Clyde! I agree with treetops about all the good stuff... I have always been aware of Chastity Bono as a queer celebrity but I did not realize that he is Chaz is trans and now goes by Chaz. Very cool of him to speak up and be open about it; I wish him the best and look forward to hearing more. (And am I just blinded by celebrity PR departments or does Cher just seem like a truly nice, down-to-earth human being?)

I didn't even realize that Cher had kids at all until I saw the first article about Chaz's transition earlier this year. I do think it's pretty neat to have someone going public with their transition. Might open up a few minds.
(Then again, reading some of the comments to that article is just depressing.)

I agree that considering the difficulty mainstream outlets seem to have discussing transgender issues, they seemed to handle this pretty well. I have been following the Chaz Bono story and I'm happy people seem to be responding to it respectfully (in general).
I had a professor last year who was a transman, and he was one of the best teachers I've ever had (he kind of changed my life and made me pursue a different profession, based on the content of his class [not his gender]). On the last day of class (there were about 200 people in this lecture--it was a super popular class), someone asked if it was true that he was "born a woman." He told us the story of his transition and how he felt his soul was now aligned with his body; he humorously said he'd had a "very interesting life" and was generally very cool about it. This is kind of a conservative area, so I wasn't sure how people would react--all 200 people stood up and applauded. It was a wonderful experience. Yes, I was quite surprised (pleasantly, of course) at how this article was approached by the interviewer. I did not read the comments though. Those tend to make me really angry. I am really glad he is out! Also, Cher earns major points in my book anyway!
And LondonBlue, your prof sounds great. And the fact that the class applauded gives me a warm feeling.

Yeah, I pretty much cried when it happened I was in that class when Prop 8 passed, and I cried then too . Emotional semester, lol!
