At Scarleteen, we believe that all people have the right to choose what’s right for them about sex and sexual orientation without fear of discrimination. Our guidelines and policies allow us to keep a safe environment for the very serious (and often loaded) discussions that take place here. So what happens in an environment where respect isn’t such the forefront?

This year MTV began a new television series Sex … with Mom and Dad. If you’ve not had an opportunity to see any of the episodes, you can link in and watch them online from the show’s site. Curious about how a half-hour show would show progress if any in discussing sex with parents I watched the first episode.

An obvious first question would be how much of the show was shot more than one time? Editing for TV takes a out a lot of originally recorded material. Reactions at times were over the top – and one major problem is the way that the teens are treated. Dr. Greg doesn’t seem to have much respect for the teens that are coming to him for advice. He name-calls, and doesn’t seem to pay adequate attention. Sex can be a difficult subject t talk about – as we all know here, especially with a parent. The tone of the show really doesn’t match the supposed purpose.

How do you all feel about the show? What are the pros and cons of such a show being aired? How do you feel about talking with parents about sex in this manner – and what are ways that may be more suitable?
