Okay, this may sound like a newbie-ish question, but I wanted to clarify something. I was always under the impression that erotica was written word, usually fictitious, but recently a friend told me that that just wasn't so. Just double checking that I know my stuff! Anyone?

Also, one other thing I was unsure of was: is erotica (assuming it is just written word) restricted to 18+?

Thanks all

It is some confusing stuff. Erotica usually refers to sexual material (stories, photographs, poems, etc.) that is considered artistic by someone. Pornography is often defined as sexual material that is less high-brow. But really, they mean pretty much the same thing. There is no way to know the intent behind a piece of something. What one person thinks is beautiful, another might find arousing, and another might find beautiful and arousing.

Most erotica online is 18+ because it is presented with other things. I'm not sure what the actual legal answer is if you're talking about just written word. I know that they don't check ID at Barnes and Noble . . .

I would think that most written erotica would be restricted to people who are of age for other "adult" things.

Yes, I checked with a local bookstore, and you do have to be 18+ to buy Erotica.

Thanks

To add to this, here's a few lines that usually get bandied about on the subject of "pornography" vs. "erotica" -

quote:
The difference between pornography and erotica is lighting.

and

quote:
If I enjoy it, it's erotica; if you enjoy it, it's pornography.

Here's what the Merriam-Webster Dictionary online says:

quote:
pornography:
1 : the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement
2 : material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement
3 : the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction <the pornography of violence>

and here's "erotica":

quote:
erotica:
1 : literary or artistic works having an erotic theme or quality
2 : depictions of things erotic

it all depends on what you define as art, and we know there is a broad spectrum of opinion on that.
