It's not a bad idea, so long as you do it safely. That means, first of all, using a sex toy designed for anal play, to make sure that you are not accidentally causing injury. Further, you'll want to use a condom with your toy, and lots of lube. And of course, you will want to go slowly and listen to your body - if you feel pain, it's time to take a break.

As a side note, the most important part of a toy made for anal play is a flared base - some vibrators and toys designed for outside or vaginal use don't have that flared area and aren't safe for anal insertion. Also, when looking at lube you may want to go for one that's fairly thick; Astroglide gel is a thicker lube that's pretty widely available in the US.
