My boyfriend and I see each other about once a week. When he fingers me, I start to bleed, even though it doesn't hurt (well, barely hurts, and only occasionally.) He feels bad about it and he's so careful and considerate. So I'd like to know if there's any way to prevent the bleeding. And why does it happen all the time? It didn't happen at all the first few times. Also, I know open wounds let lots of germs in- can people get sick down there from this?

When you two engage in manual sex, are you very relaxed and aroused? Using plenty of extra lube? Making sure to go very slowly?

We don't use lubricant. [Frown] I thought that because I was satisfied without it, I didn't need to. I'm anticipating that you will probably tell me it's a good idea to use it. Should I look for a specific type?

Yeah, it sounds pretty likely that you have a need for it, especially if you've also been checked for any infections and are all clear there (that's another cause of unexplained vaginal bleeding with intercourse or other entry).

In terms of types, it's usually a bit like brands of condoms: you'll try a few, probably, and figure out which you like. What options you have will also depend on where you're shopping. If you only have access to a grocery store or standard pharmacy, you probably won't have that many choices.

The only biggie to know is that flavored or novelty lubes (warming, numbing) are usually not sound choices for a healthy vaginal flora.
