Hello again Scarleteen,

I'm having a small issue, here. A week ago today I went to the gynecologist, and they told me that I had a bacterial infection. They gave me some stuff to use (metronidazole gel) for five days. Well, I did that... the last time I used the gel was Friday night. Now I seem to have this chunky white discharge, and a slight itch. Is this just the infection going away?

It's not uncommon for women to develop yeast infections when they are being treated for BV, unfortunately. So, if it's clumpy and itchy, that might be why.

Give your doctor a ring.

Ok. YET ANOTHER QUESTION.

My doctor gave me a pill called Fluconazole to get rid of this infection. In the medication information, it says that it may decrease the effectiveness of my birth control pill. I am currently on the placebo week... how long will it take before the effectiveness is back to normal? Should I wait a full cycle?

It probably won't, but what is generally recommended is just that you back up with another method while you're using it and then for seven days after.

That said, with both BV and a yeast infection, not only are you more likely to heal quicker if you hold off on intercourse, intercourse won't likely feel very good for you right now, anyway.
