Hi everyone,

I'm a journalist working for Xtra magazine in Toronto. I got in touch with your forum mod Heather who encouraged me to post here.

I'm working on a story about teens and their access to sex toys. Here in Canada the age of consent is 16, but almost every store that sells sex toys only allows 18+ people into their stores.

I'm interested in your perspectives, as young people exploring sexuality; do you care about sex toys? Do you have trouble purchasing them? Would you use one as an alternate to having penetrative sex with someone else?

Any comments you guys have would be really helpful, since I'm trying to get a really well-rounded understanding of the issue.

Take care!

I'm 17 and live in England. I personally, would be embarassed about buying a sex toy, and whether my parents would find out. My boyfriend, however, has a cousin that owns a sex shop about an hour away from where he lives, and his cousin gives my boyfriend some cheap. We use them very often and I love them! They make sex so much easier [Smile]

I'd love to buy a sex toy (vibrator or dildo), but I haven't had a chance yet. I'm 18, so I have no problems in that respect, but my main problems are getting down to the sex store in the city (I don't know of any other places that sell sex toys) and my parents finding out. My mum is on my checking account, so she can see where I use my check card. Needless to say, a charge at 'Sex World' would raise some suspicion (and I almost never have cash). So basically, the only thing preventing me from buying sex toys is getting the cash to do so without raising my mother's suspicion.

I love sex toys. I'm 19 and live in California where the age of consent is 18. I have a really really hard time orgasming without vibration, so I had an older friend buy me a vibrator when I was 16. When I realized that I seem to look old enough and a local 'lingerie' store that has toys and porn in the back doesn't card I was able to get them for myself until I was of legal age.

I feel that I am very open minded and can accept that sex toys dramatically help my sex life because orgasming without one is a complicated and frustrating process that involves patience and time that I just don't always have (usually 2-4 hours) I have a long term partner that I have been with since I was 17 who accepts sex toys into our regular sex life.

When I had no partner I enjoyed them by myself and they were a normal part of my masturbation. When I do have a regular partner we often include them, though not always. My favorite toy while solo is a rabbit type toy, and while partnered is a small handheld vibrator or a strap into place vibrator that rests on the clitoris.

So yes, at least one young person has sex toys, loves them, had access to them one way or another while underage and uses them solo and with a partner. I know this is not the case for most of my peers. They seem to think they are interesting, even okay, but mainly for solo use.

I'm sixteen & bored of masturbating in the same ways. I have used a vibrator but am too young to buy my own, if i was old enough i would definitely order one from the internet. I think if the age to have sex is 16 then the age to buy sex toys should be too.
