I read one of your articles called Pink Parts, or something.

I looked at my hymen, I *think*. I did this by opening my inner labia.

Saying that this IS my hymen, I couldn't find my vaginal opening, but I found something that could be.

It's a small hole to the side, closer to the left side.

I'm really confused. [Frown]

The hymen is a thin membrane that covers the vaginal opening, so if your hymen has a small hole on the side (the left side, in this case), then you would see that as your vaginal opening. Do you use tampons or anything like that? Can you comfortably fit a finger in there? If so, that'll be your vagina!

No, I don't use tampons. And I'm sort of scared to stick my finger in..

Well, it is a good first step to be exploring your sexual anatomy. By knowing what is "down there," you will get to know yourself better and feel more in control of your body.

As long as your hands are clean, it is safe to explore your vuvla and vagina with your hand. Is there any particular reason why you are scared? You can see your vaginal opening like any part of your anatomy...it is just as apart of your body as, say, your elbow. You can start with the vulva if that would make you feel more comfortable, and then continue with "Life on the Inside" section of Anatomy: Pink Parts - Female Sexual Anatomy.

Just FYI, there's no reason to be scared about seeing or touching your vulva. It's no more scary or dangerous to put a finger into your vagina than it is to put a finger into your mouth, nose or your ear.

Do you think there's a reason that feels scary to you?

I'm afraid that it might hurt.

Well, if it does, then you can stop.

But it shouldn't hurt, unless you are being very forceful. Just sliding a thin finger around or inside your vaginal opening shouldn't cause any pain.

Also, make sure that you are relaxed. That way, it will be less likely that it will hurt, although, even if it did hurt, it wouldn't be much. Sometimes when we expect pain, we think it hurts more than it actually does. Just remember than and stay calm. You can go as slowly as you want, so just know that you are in control and you should be fine!
