Yes, bleeding can sometimes happen during intercourse (or even with other kind of sexual activities), be it first time or not. It's generally not something to worry much about unless it's profuse bleeding, it goes on for more than one day or two or is something that happens quite often (by then it might be a good idea to go see a gyn to make sure there is no underlying culprit).

That said, the bleeding your partner experienced could have been due to a lack of lubrication (were you using any lube ? were your partner aroused before attempting intercourse ?), to a microtearing to her vaginal lining or to a microtear to her hymen, among other things.

Alright, then my first suggestion would be to talk to your girlfriend and make sure she's aroused enough when you have sex, as well as whether or not everything is comfortable and not painful.

Here's a Sexpert answer on the topic of bleeding that may be of use to you: http://www.scarleteen.com/article/advice/why_do_girls_bleed_after_or_before_intercourse_is_over

Also, if both of you have not gone for STI testing yet, I would suggest that you do that as soon as possible. Your girlfriend could also mention the bleeding then if it continues to be a concern.
