I know this may sound utterly stupid, but what exactly is a diaphragm and do you need to use it every time you have sexual (vaginal) intercourse? Also, any other info. will be reatly appreciated!

A diaphragm is a cup-shaped dome made out of latex that fits inside of you. Its function is to block sperm from entering, and it is always used with a spermicidal cream or jelly to kill any sperm that get past the dome.

The diaphragm is inserted before sexual contact; it is not effective if left out or inserted improperly. Typical use failure rates are as high as 20% for this reason. Many teens and young women find them an excellent option because they only have sex now and then and want to avoid on-going side effects.
