Are you laying belly down, or have your crotch resting on the towel? If it's the former, it's most likey rubbing. The latter would be dry humping.
How a person goes about dry humping without a partner is up to them. There are several ways to do it, depending on what feels good.

Different things work for different people. Dry humping might be enough stimulation for some girls. Everyone is different!
