Norplant, a long-term birth control method in the form of six tiny rods placed under the skin of a woman's arm, has been taken off the market by the manufacturer. This decision leaves Canadian women with one less choice for birth control. Norplant was approved in Canada in 1994 and was 99.8% effective. A 1998 contraceptive study found that only about 1% of the Canadian population were using Norplant. For many women, its higher cost (about $450) and
some of the difficulties involved with insertion may have been factors in its lack of popularity in Canada.

My mom said that she read on some website that Depo-Provera was coming off the market too, because studies now say that it is ineffective. I did a search on it and I found nothing, so has anybody heard anything like that? Maybe she got it confused with Norplant, I don't know.

I think your mom was most likely thinking of Lunelle.

They have a replacement though, called Implanon, which is a progestin-only implant, just one rod, which stays in place up to three years.
